Traveling or relocating with our furry companions is a big deal for us pet owners! Thankfully, Costa Rica is a pet-friendly country that warmly welcomes pets, and with the right preparation, vacationing or relocating with your pet can be a smooth experience.

The most important step is researching Costa Rica’s pet regulations. Costa Rica has specific requirements to ensure the health and safety of both animals and humans. For instance, some pets cannot be imported, such as birds, fish, and ferrets. Typically, you will need to comply with the following:

  • Ensure your pet has up-to-date identification, including a microchip or legible tattoo.
  • A valid bilingual health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian and endorsed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Services veterinarian. This certificate should confirm that your pet is free from contagious diseases and has received the necessary vaccinations. The examination for the certificate must be conducted within 2 weeks prior to departure to Costa Rica.

Dogs must have the following vaccinations: distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus, rabies (for animals 3 months or older)

Cats must have the following vaccinations: rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia, feline leukemia, rabies (for animals 3 months or older)

  • Dogs traveling back to the US will need a special certificate stating that the dog is free of screwworms. The certificate must be approved by SENASA and completed within 5 days prior to shipment.
  • Pets imported commercially or as cargo will need an import permit from the National Animal Health Service (SENASA). The Import Permit costs approximately $20. Check with your local Costa Rican embassy or consulate for updated information on this process.

Choosing the Right Transportation Option

Air Travel: If you are flying to Costa Rica, research airlines that have pet-friendly policies. Some airlines allow pets to travel in-cabin if they meet specific size and weight restrictions, while others require them to travel in the cargo hold. It is essential to choose a reputable airline with experience in pet transportation.

Land Travel: If you are already in a neighboring country, traveling to Costa Rica by car with your pet may be an option. However, be aware of any border crossing requirements and ensure your pet’s comfort during the journey.

Preparing Your Pet for the Journey

Moving to a new country can be stressful for pets, so it’s crucial to prepare them for the journey ahead:

  • Visit the Veterinarian: Schedule a visit to the veterinarian for a thorough health checkup, vaccinations, and to obtain the necessary documents. Ensure your pet is in good health and fit for travel.
  • Familiarization: Gradually acclimate your pet to their travel crate or carrier. Make it a comfortable and safe space by placing familiar bedding and toys inside.
  • Practice Runs: If possible, take your pet on short trips in their travel crate before the actual journey to get them accustomed to the environment.

Health and Safety Considerations

Costa Rica is a tropical country, and as such, it is essential to safeguard your pet’s health:

  • Parasite Prevention: Regularly treat your pet for fleas, ticks, and other parasites common in the region.
  • Vaccinations and Healthcare: Keep up with your pet’s vaccinations and regular health checkups to prevent any preventable diseases.

Bringing your pet to Costa Rica can be a memorable and rewarding experience, allowing you to share the Pura Vida spirit with your four-legged companion. Remember to plan ahead, research entry requirements, choose the right transportation, and adequately prepare for the journey. With proper preparation and a little adventure, you and your pet can embark on an unforgettable journey to this tropical paradise. So pack your bags, bring your pet, and get ready to create lasting memories in Costa Rica!
